Merck Director, MRL IT Strategic Programs in Branchburg, New Jersey

Job Description

Our IT team operates as a business partner proposing ideas and innovative solutions that enable new organizational capabilities. We collaborate internationally to deliver the services and solutions that help everyone to be more productive and enable innovation.

The Director, Research Labs IT Strategic Programs Lead will drive strategic programs that have cross Research & Development Division Value Team impact (e.g., modernization) and cross IT Divisional impact (e.g., our Company's strategic cloud program, Enterprise priorities where our Research & Development Division IT is engaged, etc.). Initially, the selected candidate will take over leadership of the Research & Development Division Modernization program and our Research & Development Division's involvement in the Blue Sky program and movement to the cloud. Research & Development Division Modernization is a Board of Directors sponsored initiative to modernize lab hardware and software infrastructure and front-end computing to make our critical lab technology more resilient. The Blue Sky program is one of IT's top priorities to better utilize cloud architectures to attain increased resiliency, speed, and efficiency and to better utilize additional emerging capabilities associated with cloud architectures.

The selected candidate will guide and be accountable for the success of these high visibility strategic programs. This will include both hands on work driving the projects to successful completion as well as reporting on the status of these programs to all levels of the organization. The selected candidate will perform a hybrid role which includes schedule, cost, and resource planning, driving execution and identifying and mitigating issues and risks, and reporting key metrics and status to management.

The selected candidate will guide a team of indirect people resources while also influencing the direction of how our organization should be structured to lead additional initiatives in the future. While the initial scope of the role includes these two key initiatives, future strategic programs will be added to the scope of this role.

In addition to driving Strategic Programs to successful outcomes, the candidate will also drive new ways of working. Specifically, the candidate will act as a advocate for the overall IT transformation and actively reinforce new ways of working with peers and customers. Also, the candidate will serve as a Subject Matter Advisor to the organization for technology leading practices and evolving technology standards.

Education:

  • B.A./B.S. in computer science, engineering, information technology, management information systems, or related discipline

  • M.A./M.S. preferred

Prerequisites:

  • 10 years directing technical teams

  • Has directed and steered large, enterprise, strategic technology initiatives

  • Extensive Project Management experience including both project management process experience as well as leading successful projects

  • Ability to drive and lead teams consisting of both direct and indirect people resources

  • Global mindset and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with and develop and nurture relationships and networks with global teams and organizations

  • Knowledge of a broad range of cloud application and infrastructure services

  • Worked with modern hardware and software infrastructure concerns including expertise with both server and front-end hardware and software

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to network internally and externally, and work effectively with all organizational levels

  • Demonstrated ability to build and guide agile teams

  • Knowledge of forecasting, modeling, and scenario development tools and techniques

  • Understanding on how to leverage the leaders and resources available to drive progress

  • Should be comfortable challenging the status quo and possess ability to convince and manage stakeholders

Preferred

  • Worked in the Pharmaceutical industry, especially supporting Research organizations

  • Expertise with Amazon Web Services with broad knowledge of AWS services and trends

  • Knowledge of CI and CD tools and modern development and deployment tools and practices

  • Product Management expertise and experience building and successfully evolving technology products
