Optum combines data, technology, and expertise to power modern health care. The Data & Advanced Analytic Tools Consulting team drives the adoption and use of Optum's data assets and technology solutions in the Life Sciences industry.

Optum's industry-leading data assets include clinically-robust Electronic Health Record (EHR) data spanning the care continuum (from the legacy Humedica business), eligibility-controlled affiliate and non-affiliate insurance claims data, a new class of deterministically-linked Integrated EHR and claims data, and linked profile data including socio-economic information and health risk assessments (HRAs). Optum's data assets enable our clients to enrich their view of the patient and the patient journey through the healthcare system, serving needs across a spectrum of functional areas including real world evidence, health economics and outcomes research, safety and surveillance, epidemiology, and product commercialization.

Optum's advanced analytic tools empower our clients to harness intelligence from these data assets with scale. Optum’s suite of tools include Clinformatics for Managed Markets, an application that assesses the effect of plan design and patient cost-sharing on drug utilization, Clinformatics for Clinical Trials, an application that optimizes clinical trial recruitment, and a next generation set of advanced analytic applications designed for a platform ecosystem, including a Weekly Tracker module.

We are now looking for a dynamic Director to support Data & Advanced Analytic Tools, working closely with our clients across the industry. The Director is expected to serve as the primary point of contact for a collection of strategic life sciences clients and as an expert in the contents and uses of Optum Life Sciences' data assets. Success in this role requires : (a) the ability to engage and educate clients and prospects about the assets and capabilities of Optum Life Sciences; (b) creativity to identify and frame specific, even novel, responses to the client's request; (c) comfort leading cross-functional projects inside a matrix and geographically dispersed organization; and (d) collaboration with sales professionals and other Optum colleagues who may be pursuing or serving the same companies

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage client relationships: listen, understand, and articulate client needs

  • Serve as functional subject matter expert on data and analytics to support data, business intelligence applications, and analytic sales

  • Solve unique and complex problems with broad impact on the business

  • Partner with internal team members on cross functional client engagements

  • Predict emerging client needs and participate in the development of innovative solutions to meet those needs

  • Participate in the development of business strategy, develop case studies and business proposals

  • Interact with other departments, such as sales, operations and client services, to ensure a high level of client satisfaction through successful execution of projects and use of applications and data

  • Work closely with Product Development and other entities within the Optum family of companies to support product improvements and new product offerings

  • Provide thought leadership on new ideas and interface with clients to obtain feedback

  • Motivate, recruit and train members the team!

  • Expect 60% strategic, consultative support for data and tools, 40% business development.

  • This consulting team manages, grows, and develops relationships with research, scientific, and commercial leaders at life sciences companies through the use of Optum's data assets and technology applications

  • The Director must have The Director is expected to contribute ideas and effort to: the professional development of other consultants; the improvement of internal processes; the enhancement of existing products and services; the creation of new offerings; and Optum Life Sciences business strategy

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of professional experience in the life sciences industry, healthcare field, or management consulting

  • 7+ years of experience leading client engagements or large projects for internal customers

  • 5+ years of experience organizing and supervising the work of others in the conduct of research, analysis, strategic planning, or customer support

  • Able to travel 25-50% as required (as COVID allows)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of insurance claims data and/or electronic health records

  • Demonstrated ability to consult with clients on how to effectively use data to achieve business objectives

  • Proven track record of managing analytic data consulting engagements, or pull through on use of business intelligence applications and consulting teams

  • Superior communication skills, including proposal and report writing, presentation development and delivery, and inquiry and direction for internal operations, project execution, and business development

  • Experience developing new business and identifying add-on work

  • Advanced degree (MBA, MS, PhD)
