J&J Family of Companies External Manufacturing Manager (2 positions) in Cincinnati, Ohio

Ethicon LLC, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for an External Operations Manager (2 positions) to be located in Guaynabo - Puerto Rico, Cincinnati & Raritan - US or Juarez- Mexico.

The Ethicon Surgical Care business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies—including sutures, surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices—that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women’s health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon Surgical Care business combines products and services of two market-leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Ethicon, Inc. based in Somerville, New Jersey, was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing, helping to transform the safety and effectiveness of open surgery. As the External Operations Manager, you will:

  • Own relationship with medium complexity suppliers: Monitor performance, develop and lead regular performance reviews; oversee product tech transfers and decommissioning of sites, engage suppliers in lean process improvements and manage operations via virtual plant management.

  • Deliver on financial, service, reliability, quality, and growth commitments.

  • Develop a strong understanding of the process and all technical details for the product currently manufactured at the contract manufacturing facility.

  • Maintain relationships with vendors and contractors to ensure good, reliable sources of supply and information.

  • Define and build relationships with other partners to leverage opportunities. Manage prospective improvements, corrective actions, validations and manufacturing scale ups at the site.

  • Process all disputed purchases of goods and services for the protection of the company and with fairness to the supplier.

  • Develop monthly metrics and data in support of detailed worldwide sales and order. Ensure documentation, training, configuration, testing, production promotions, archiving, and so on are in compliance with business and regulatory policies.

  • Maintain awareness of current market trends and conditions that affect suppliers, cost of goods, pricing and may have operational or strategic implications for the company.

  • Develop and drive the External Manufacturing Strategy for, with and through the stakeholder community.

  • Assess existing global supplier footprints and product supply opportunity; Partner with suppliers to drive network efficiencies in alignment with global EM Strategy.

  • Perform analysis of investments required to support recurring cost reductions and business growth for supplier sites.

  • Identify potential Quality/Regulatory, Technical and/or Supply Chain challenges. Work with key internal stakeholders and EM sites to resolve.

  • Develop, implement and lead proactive change and risk management processes for suppliers.

  • Own New Product Introduction process with EMs; Plan and direct NPIs with key internal stakeholder alignment, lead J&J/EM resource meetings and ensure successful NPI launch.

  • Escalate issues that may impact the Global Supply Chain organization.


  • Bachelor’s Degree is required. Master’s degree is preferred.

  • FPX, PMP, PE and/or Process Excellence certifications are preferred.

  • Minimum Eight (8) years of experience in supply chain including: External Operations, Manufacturing, Procurement, Distribution, Planning and/or Finance is required.

  • Experience managing suppliers, negotiating contracts, and working on supplier agreements is preferred.

  • Medical devices experience is preferred.

  • Experience working in Manufacturing Operations is highly preferred.

  • Managerial experience is preferred.

  • Supply Chain finance knowledge preferred.

  • Strong analytical/technical aptitude & competence, project management skills and experience leading cross-functional projects is required.

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written are required.

  • Strong influence and leadership skills required, especially leading without authority.

  • Experience with the commercialization of new products is highly preferred.

  • Prior knowledge of Advanced Planning systems such as ERP, MRP, and SAP is preferred.

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point is required.

  • Proficiency in English is required.

  • Availability to travel outside Puerto Rico 25%.
