Merck 2022 Environmental Monitoring Special Studies (EMSS) Intern in Durham, North Carolina

Job Description

These positions provide candidates with great personal/career development opportunities, the opportunity to work on projects having an impact on vaccine manufacturing, and a chance to see if our Company is the right company for their long-term goals. The intern projects vary with current business needs and be in one or more of the following areas:

PLANT ENGINEERING, FACILITIES MAINTENANCE, AND RELIABILITY

  • Assist engineers in the development of project objectives and scope by analyzing customer requirements and producing sketches, drawings, written descriptions, project schedules, or specifications for customer approval

  • Ensure compliance with global engineering standards, engineering procedures, OSHA/EPA standards, plant safety standards, pressure safety design, and environmental standards on all projects and prepare technical reports

  • Perform and check engineering calculations following standard methods and principles for projects

  • Assist with the procurement process of equipment specifications, bid evaluation, and contract administration

  • Assist with conducting scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, risk management, procurement, and installation support, including coordinating the activities of contract engineers and trade contractors as well as providing recommendations to the customer

  • Assist engineers in producing design documentation for the desired installation via computer-aided drafting (CAD)

  • Work with all areas of manufacturing and compliance organizations in order to drive execution of project goals

  • Work with facilities and reliability engineers to get an insight into maintenance and reliability improvement programs

  • Assist with preventative maintenance plans, reducing procurement cost of obsolete or single-source parts, and developing standard operating procedures and other procedures for installed systems

  • Collaborate with production and technical staff on day-to-day activities such as process troubleshooting and problem-solving

  • Aid implementation of Operational Excellence program and support Process Improvement/Lean Manufacturing sitewide

Required Education & Experience:

  • Candidates must be Sophomore level curriculum or higher, working toward BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering or other related science (Environmental, Energy Engineering, or Materials Science) or manufacturing-related program (Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering, etc.).

  • Candidates must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 prior to the start date

  • Candidates must be proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Candidates must be able to physically willing and able to climb stairs and ladders

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Candidates should have strong communication and analytical skills for results analysis, leadership potential, and ethics

  • Candidates should be able to execute multiple tasks under tight deadlines and prioritize responsibilities, and understand planning and/or design concepts and methods

  • Candidates should be able to work autonomously and in a team environment
