The Senior Director, Health System Performance Improvement will lead inpatient care management and clinical variation team for Optum’s long term client partnerships. The Senior Director is responsible for leading and partnering with client leadership and Optum professionals both remote and onsite client

are meeting established expectations. The leader will coordinate with the onsite and remote teams across all functions of the program including analytics, improvement initiatives, project management, change management, physician alignment, results measurement, executive reporting, and performance sustainability. The Senior Director will partner closely with the client executive clinical and operational leadership to ensure the partnership results are achieved and sustained.

The role of the inpatient clinical variation team is to design, implement and sustain a comprehensive system-wide improvement plan targeting clinical, operational, and financial efficiency opportunities within inpatient care delivery. The priority areas of focus are disease-specific care standards deployed throughout the acute care facilities. The clinical variation team will align Optum care solutions with the client opportunities, continuously driving measureable results in a highly complex environment. Successful performance will be achieved through establishing a consistent, high quality care delivery model that aligns physicians, clinicians, and other key stakeholders, leveraging SSM Health and Optum clinical systems to achieve industry leading outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partners with client and Optum executives and physician leaders to guide the overall clinical transformation effort, including establishing strategic priorities and goals, measuring results, identifying and removing barriers to success, and monitoring sustainability to ensure consistent performance

  • Leads the multi-disciplinary Optum team in the overall work of transforming inpatient care management performance and the design and implementation of inpatient care standards

  • Creates a trusted partner relationship with client executives and is seen as a partner in the successful design and implementation of the transformation program

  • Supervises and accountable for clinical transformation staff from business units throughout Optum involved in the implementation of the clinical transformation program at the client site

  • Develops and delivers clear and concise updates to senior leadership at the client site and within Optum

  • Monitors progress toward savings results, key milestones and service level agreements, and provides regular updates and escalates (as appropriate) to internal and external key stakeholders

  • Monitors program budget and return on investment progress to ensure meeting contractual agreement

  • Presents to large groups well and has the ability to adjust message to audience (CEO, CMO, CFO and other system clinical leaders)

  • Participates as a member of various Optum teams to create innovative solutions associated with the strategic development of client programs

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or 8 years healthcare equivalent experience

  • 7+ years of clinical variation reduction in a hospital setting

  • Solid financial and budgeting experience

  • History of driving initiatives and achieving performance goals across complex organizations

  • Demonstrated self-starter with strong planning organization, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proven track record of building and influencing relationships with external and internal executives and stakeholders, as well as leading, influencing and managing a large matrix workforce

  • Travel up to 80% for client or internal meetings

  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Business Administration; Master of Health Administration

  • Experience in hospital operations or care management and/or leading complex clinical transformation consulting engagements resulting in significant recurring financial benefit

  • Experience developing clinical transformation methodologies and designing innovative solutions in a complex and rapidly changing environment, including achievement of financial savings

  • Solid presentation, written and verbal communication skills, including well-developed interpersonal skills

Colorado Residents Only: The salary/hourly range for Colorado residents is $130,300 to $250,200. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
