3M’s Consumer Business Group (CBG) is seeking an Insights Manager for their Stationary and Office Division (SOSD) located at Maplewood, MN. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.

Job Summary:

The Insights Manager position will be responsible for recommending and directing the design, planning and execution of primary consumer research initiatives across current and future platforms for the Post-it® and Scotch™ Brands. The position will have responsibility for occasionally managing external Insights consultants. The position will interact with divisional leadership, brand marketers and new product marketers to address key strategic issues through Insights, as well as interact with external vendors for research design, proposals, and execution. The outcome of this consumer research will include actionable insights and recommendations which reduce risk and optimize opportunities for improved product, positioning, packaging, advertising, and pricing strategies and tactics to drive core (established) and new business growth for the SOSD Division. The Insights Manager will also be responsible for directing foundational research for the brand, such as brand health, consumer segmentation, and portfolio management studies. Additionally, this position will be responsible for working with a cross-functional team to determine new white space opportunities and new products for growth, both in the US and Globally.

The Insights Manager will be a key contributor to the SOSD Strategic Plan and will lead the creation of annual insights plans to directly support the brands’ marketing plans. This person will also collaborate with other members of the Insights team within the CBG both in St. Paul and across the globe, as well as with other division partners in key functions such as Brand Marketing, Marketing Communications, New Products Marketing, Design, Sales, Shopper, Digital and Product Development.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Proactively be the "voice of the consumer" throughout the organization. Collaborate with key stakeholders on assessing business issues to develop, manage and execute customized learning plans for each brand. This requires proactively thinking of the next step in the research process, and the next sequence of research projects

  • Consult, advise and influence local and global brand teams on insights methodologies, usage and interpretation. Needs to ruthlessly scope a project up front with the marketing team to ensure that the appropriate research is identified and prioritized for the objective, along with the correct consumer target for the project. The Insights Manager will recommend/execute the correct method to help discover the insights needed to meet the project’s objective, and use creative problem solving techniques to design complex multi-faceted research studies.

  • Gather and synthesize data, while drawing and leveraging insights from new and historical sources

  • Negotiate with vendors to drive optimized costs, and closely manage the budget

  • Continuously stay updated on new CPG Best Practices and methodologies

Skills needed:

  • Proven experience to develop and transfer Consumer Empathy

  • Have a strong knowledge of consumer insights tools, using a broad array of current and new methodologies - quantitative and qualitative

  • Have strong business acumen

  • Demonstrate an ability to translate information and data into actionable insights and recommendations

  • Strong strategic thinking skills, including capabilities to assess current situation, draw conclusions and envision future business opportunities

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written/visual) to create and deliver compelling presentations of insights to teams, senior management and key retailers; a candid communicator. Needs to be a clear, professional communicator of consumer insights findings, and able to translate complex ideas and information in a way that is appropriate for a variety of audiences.

  • Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects with little assistance, executing programs and projects from start to completion, meeting both cost and timing expectations

  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and team-building skills as well as mature conflict resolution skills

  • Prioritization skills are essential. Must be able to negotiate for Insights across a matrixed organization

  • Global Consumer and Shopper Insights experience a plus

Basic Qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of combined experience in Consumer research in Consumer Packaged Goods, as a supplier and/or client in a private, public, government, or military environment

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience conducting research in conjunction with new product marketing launches in a private, public, government, or military environment

    Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or Master's degree from an accredited institution.

  • Experience with consumer segmentation, brand architecture, positioning and advertising.

  • Global Insights experience

  • Experience Managing people

Location: Maplewood, MN

Travel: Up to 25% domestic/international travel is anticipated

Relocation: Is authorized within country per 3M policies
