Description: Lockheed Martin is seeking an experienced and driven Mechanical Engineer to lead the Naval Ship Machinery / Propulsion Systems team on the Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) program. In this role you will lead the Machinery integrated product team with responsibility for shipboard integration of propulsion systems, engines, and major machinery on the MMSC platform. MMSC is an exciting new construction naval combatant ship class being built for US Navy Foreign Military Sales. This is an opportunity for solving challenging assignments working on a fast paced, complex ship.

We’re looking for a candidate with experience designing engines or propulsion systems and integrating them onto large platforms. The candidate will be solving technical problems with ship production as they arise and should be capable of diagnosing design flaws from drawings and hands-on testing. Experience working on naval ships is a plus. Experience working closely with sub-contractor or vendor engineers on previous projects is a plus.

The Engineer’s main role is to solve technical problems, direct and oversee the work of junior engineers on the Machinery team, review and update 2D and 3D designs, interface with major equipment vendors, and develop applicable documentation.

Specific Responsibilities of the position may include:

• Work directly with major equipment / machinery vendors to resolve issues with integrating the equipment onto the ship. May involve travel to vendor production and test facilities.

• Represent Lockheed Martin in design and production discussions with the shipyard building MMSC.

• Provide day-to-day technical leadership to 2-4 mechanical engineers on the Machinery team.

• Work independently to solve technical issues in 2D and 3D designs

• Provide drawing interpretation to the shipyard constructing the MMSC

• Perform detailed engineering calculations to validate system designs meet ship construction requirements

• Resolve design issues that emerge during production

• Review / oversee vendor product designs and acceptance test activities

• Track and report progress to budget and schedule commitments

• Facilitate communications of issues and solutions throughout the MMSC industry team

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, marine engineering, or a related discipline.

• Minimum of 6 years previous professional experience in a related engineering discipline.

• Engineering experience with heavy machinery, industrial size engines, or propulsion systems.

• Experience using computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, AutoCAD or CATIA.

• Periodic travel to the Lockheed Martin facility in Baltimore, MD and our partner shipyard in Marinette, WI will be required.

• U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain DoD Secret Level Clearance

Desired Skills:

• Familiarity with machinery operated on naval vessels.

• Experience working on naval ship design or construction.

• Experience working closely with sub-contractor or vendor engineers on previous projects

• Understanding of American Bureau of Shipping Naval Vessel Rules

• Previous experience with US DoD and/or US Navy programs

• Working knowledge of standard shipbuilding rules and regulations, as well as the associated regulatory agencies and the review & approval process.

• Familiarity with Navisworks software for reviewing integrated 3D models.
