What You'll Be Doing:
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will have the opportunity to develop a quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) model of Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the holistic effects of pharmacological perturbations on modulating a biological system is the underlying aim of systems pharmacology. QSP is defined as an approach to translational medicine that combines computational and experimental methods to elucidate, validate and apply new pharmacological concepts to the development and use of small molecule and biologic drugs. QSP modeling has been gaining popularity as a tool in drug discovery/development to generate hypotheses, guide experimental design, and support decision making. Alzheimer’s disease is a central neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of dementia. Development of a QSP model of AD would enhance our understanding of the complex relationship amongst pathophysiological mechanisms of AD. The postdoc will work in a collaborative environment alongside a diverse team of modelers, experimentalists, and subject matter experts to gain a quantitative understanding the pathophysiological processes in Alzheimer’s disease.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Developing a QSP model of Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology.
Conduct extensive literature review to gather important data for model construction and identify gaps of knowledge.
Aid in the design of experiments to inform model components.
Communicate research to internal/external audiences and publish manuscripts.
What You Bring:
Candidates must currently hold a PhD OR receive a PhD by fall.
Modeling experience (e.g. pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics or quantitative systems modeling, chemical reaction kinetic modeling)
Experience with relevant software and programming languages for coding, data preparation, visualization and analysis (e.g. MATLAB, Simbiology, R)
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, cell biology or systems biology.
Background in neuroscience and neurodegenerative disease pathophysiology.
Prior experience in mathematical modeling approaches/methods, such as dynamical systems modeling, machine learning, parameter estimation/optimization, sensitivity analysis, and virtual patient populations.
Prior experience in network inference and analyzing -omics datasets
Strong communication skills and a passion for science
