CarMax’s ability to efficiently produce the wide range of vehicles our customers desire while meeting CarMax’s high-quality standards has set us apart from the competition. Today, Service Operations is one of the largest parts of our business. We have over 10,000 associates reconditioning over 800k vehicles/yr at a cost of $1B. Like other parts of CarMax’s business, Service Operations will need to transform in order to meet customer’s everchanging needs and CarMax’s growth expectations. We are looking for a dynamic analytic leader to play a key leadership role in this transformation.

What You Will Do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop new operational strategies/visions

  • Work with team members, other departments, store teams, and senior executives to visualize new ways we can run the business

  • Be able to listen to objections and concerns from all levels of the organization and respond appropriately

  • Implement new operational strategies/visions

  • Work with team members, store/regional management, and the VP of Operations to get buy-in on the necessity of and the plan for achieving a vision

  • Provide all the analytics and data visibility required to implement the plan

  • Track CarMax’s current and recent performance to identify times when immediate strategy change is needed

  • Systematically highlight current business opportunities

  • Develop implementation strategies for needed changes

  • Team Management / Associate Development

  • Lead a group of typically 0-2 managers and 4-10 analysts

  • Own creating a rewarding and challenging environment designed to teach high performing associates how to become effective business drivers/agents of change

Purpose of the Role

The complexity of reconditioning at CarMax ensures that this role is uniquely positioned to drive real value for CarMax’s customers. The Director of Operations Strategy will be expected to drive customer value by identifying opportunities, designing solutions, and implementing new processes that improve both vehicle quality and cost. Along the way, the Director is responsible for the development of a high-powered team of analysts, senior analysts, and managers to help lead this change. This role has the potential to annually add tens of millions of dollars to the bottom line through both waste elimination and quality improvements.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Experience working effectively with senior management, particularly with a record of success at selling new ideas

  • Experience managing highly analytical projects and people

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and listening skills in order to (a) effectively manage their team, (b) listen and understand conflicting points of view on complex matters, (c) navigate through potential contentious situations that periodically occur in a change process, and (d) communicate complex ideas

  • Exceptional math and reasoning skills in order to (a) effectively deliberate with senior management, (b) model and quantify complex problems (both on a computer and on-the-fly), and (c) challenge and motivate top performing analysts to improve their analytical ability

  • Familiarity with computer/programming skills in order to help the team (a) use our corporate database to answer key questions, (b) automate key analyses so that they can be used repeatedly by management and/or store associates, and (c) visualize the possibilities and difficulties of leveraging our databases to solve a given business problem

  • 7-10 years experience in strategy and analysis

  • Four year undergraduate degree with exceptional academic performance
