The Exploratory Biology group of Janssen Biotherapeutics (JBIO) is seeking a highly motivated and independent researcher to lead the iPSC Cell Therapy team in Spring House, PA. You will be a key leader to advance Janssen’s efforts to deliver novel allogeneic cell therapy platforms to the clinic. Key activities will include but are not limited to: (1) directing and managing organizational strategy around iPSC-derived cell therapies, (2), providing scientific and technical guidance for external collaborations evaluating iPSC-derived cell therapies, and (3) partnering with the Oncology Therapeutic Area to lead preclinical programs through candidate selection.

The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team dedicated to building an industry leading allogeneic cell therapy platform. You should have deep experience with state-of-the-art cell therapy approaches (diverse cell types, gene editing, synthetic biology), and be willing to apply your knowledge to overcome current limitations to unleash the full potential of cell therapies in oncology and beyond. Must be highly proficient in managing remote teams and alliances with academic and industry partners.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Serve as subject matter expert on iPSC biology and platform technology

  • Direct and lead teams of internal and external lab scientists to deliver iPSC-derived allogeneic cell therapies pursuant with organizational strategies

  • Support development and optimization of novel protocols for differentiation of iPSCs to immune lineage cells including T cells, NK cells, etc.

  • Validate and optimize methods for multiplexed gene editing and large transgene delivery in diverse cell types

  • Oversee development and testing of novel technologies to increase allogeneic cell therapy persistence, including but not limited to methods to overcome host-vs-graft reactivity against therapeutic cells

  • Create workplans for multiple external collaborations, and ensure timely execution on project deliverables

  • Partner with Therapeutic Area (TA) and cell therapy teams to support program-specific activities

  • Closely mentor junior scientists to further develop talent within the group

  • Foster a collaborative, creative, and rigorous culture of scientific discovery


  • Ph.D. in Biology or Immunology required

  • Minimum 10 years research experience in either CAR-T, iPSC biology, developmental biology, immunology, or cell and molecular biology required

  • Demonstrated experience leading small- to mid-sized scientific teams

  • Experience with CAR-T generation and functional characterization required

  • Experience with advanced cell therapy strategies (e.g. gene-edited, switchable CARs, multi-antigen CARs, non-viral gene delivery, etc.) strongly preferred

  • Experience with gene editing methodologies (CRISPR, TALEN, ZFNs) preferred

  • Experience with iPSC differentiation to immune subsets preferred

  • Familiarity with generation and interpretation of high-dimensional datasets (single cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, Cytof) preferred

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a highly matrixed environment and lead cross-functional activities is required.

  • Must have excellent communication (both written and oral), time management, record keeping and data analysis and collaborative skills.
