Duke Energy Engineer III or Senior Engineer (Electrical) - Relay Tech Support in United States

This position can be filled as either an Engineer III or a Senior Engineer, dependent upon the qualifications of the selected individual. Minimum requirements to be considered at each level are outlined in the Basic/Required Qualifications.Job Summary

The Relay SME provides technical support and guidance to Regional Engineers, field crews, CMV Supervisors for issues associated with protective relay schemes, remote terminal units (RTUs), pilot protection schemes, digital fault recorders, line traps, transformer gauges, instrument transformers (secondary-side only), and other equipment used to protect, monitor, and control Generation, Transmission and Distribution systems. This includes both substations and mobile (portable) equipment. This support may be provided during maintenance, construction, or while equipment is in operation.

The Relay SME provides the second / third level of technical field support beyond the field crews, CMV Supervisors, and the Region Engineer for issues associated with P&C components. The Relay SME serves as a conduit between CMV, Engineering, and Asset Management to provide expertise for operational issues associated with P&C components in the field.

Relay SME support will require interface with the following organizations, as a minimum:

• Craft Workforce (Maintenance and Construction)• Work Management• Transmission Engineering (P&C, Substation, and Line)• ECC/DCC personnel• Other Asset Management Personnel (System Standards, Equipment Engineering, Transmission and Substation Performance, and Data Management)• Transmission Planning• Project Management• Generation Plant PTAC and System Engineers• System Operations Compliance• NERC/SERC

Basic/Required Qualifications (Senior Engineer):

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in electrical engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • State registration as a Professional Engineer. (PE)

  • 5+ years of engineering experience.

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer III):

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in electrical engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • 4+ years of engineering experience.

Responsibilities

The following is a summary of the majority of tasks expected to be performed by this position:

• Provides equipment technical support for protective relay schemes and other ancillary components as follows:• Provides evaluation and interpretation of equipment test results and trending• Supports equipment commissioning• Provides feedback to appropriate Engineering organization on first-time equipment deployment• Assists with mobile equipment installation as needed• Recommends proactive maintenance tasks to Equipment Engineering for P&C equipment to mitigate recurring problems• Assists Equipment Engineering in developing maintenance PM priorities• Supports Equipment Engineering, Transmission and Substation Performance, System Standards, and Data Management with development of programs, maintenance basis, and equipment specifications• Leads or participates in Root Cause Investigations• Serves on Duke Energy teams to provide asset-related experience and knowledge• Assists in providing guidance on job plans and procedures• Assists/supports TSS and training department with training for P&C components• Provides field support for troubleshooting, adjustment, repair, and replacement of protective relay schemes and other ancillary components• Assists Region Engineer with outage analysis, documentation, and follow-up• Provides support and/or operation for discipline specific test equipment needs and training• Provides forensic analysis on failed parts and equipment• Assists in material selection for maintenance repairs as needed and assists Equipment Engineering with validation of spare parts inventory• Assists Equipment Engineering in validating the equipment sparing strategy• Performs substation, mobile (portable), and equipment condition assessments• Evaluates the performance and reliability of P&C assets and identifies/mitigates the system and/or equipment issues that may impact system reliability• Establishes working relationships with industry organizations and counterparts within other utilities to learn about industry trends/practices and to share information regarding equipment and maintenance initiatives• Provides Work Management and Data Management support for system programs and other projects as follows:• Analyzes data for work prioritization• Provides review of contractor test data as needed• Provides interface with Equipment Engineering and manufacturers on equipment issues.• Evaluates equipment being removed from service for future disposition• Acts as liaison between Asset Management and Relay CMV Supervisors/technicians• Provides input to Equipment Engineers for the revision of job plans and procedures.• Provides a thorough investigation of PRC-004 protection system misoperations to prevent recurrence, documents the investigation, and spearheads the necessary corrective actions. In addition, the Relay SME also provides input to the Transmission Outage Management System for outages caused by protection system misoperations with the assistance of Transmission and Substation Performance Engineer(s).• Assists in modifying, standardizing, and validating RTS test routines• Assists in evaluating out-of-tolerance as-left relay settings• Participates in NERC/SERC conference calls to explain misoperations, corrective actions, and cause code determination• Provide CMV with ArcFlash calculations when requested, as applicable.
